CLOBBERED TRANSFER WARE PLATE
Victorian Staffordshire
W R & Co (Ridgway)
Circa 1830-34
For consideration is this very rare, brown transfer ware plate by William Ridgway with a central bouquet of flowers and more of the same around the rim. The flowers are clobbered (hand enamel applied over the glaze) in shades of pink, purple, orange and green. It is absolutely stunning and a great opportunity to add an exquisite piece to your collection. It is stamped as shown below with a beehive mark and hand numbered 400.
Ridgway Potteries Ltd, was founded sometime around 1744. Sometimes called the Grandfather of the Potteries, the Ridgway family can be traced to the earliest days of the Staffordshire potteries, along with such famous names as Wedgwood, Spode and Adams.
Under the management of one family member, John Ridgway, the Ridgway potters were appointed as Potter to Her Majesty Queen Victoria. This was the highest acclaim for any English pottery firm.
One of the family members, William Ridgway, operated the Bell Works in Shelton and the Church Works in nearby Hanley from 1830-54. The Bell Works Pottery at Bethesda Street has been The Potteries Museum since 1956 and houses the largest and most important collection of North Staffordshire pottery in the world.
Measures: 9"
Condition: No chips or cracks, only a couple of rough spots around the rim and a small amount of crazing is present. The color is vibrant, the style is elegant and classic.

Staffordshire Embossed Cream / Ivory Ware Plate
George Jones and Sons Crescent Potteries
Circa 1921-33
This gorgeous, creamy ivory plate is gently scalloped around the rim and features embossed scrolled reliefs. The plate features lavender, blue and pink Snapdragons or Gladiolus (I’m guessing based on the shape of the leaves) but may be Larkspur, Delphinium or Foxglove. Whichever they are, they are all lovely.
The company began operation in c.1864 at Stoke Upon Trent at the Trent Potteries Works as George Jones and in 1873 became George Jones & Sons Ltd. They produced gorgeous majolica and earthen wares.
In 1907 the works was renamed Crescent Potteries.
George Jones died in 1893.

"There is probably no object so much a natural part of the English landscape, nor which makes such a direct appeal to the heart and imagination, as the old country cottage". This perfectly charming 17th century cottage in Luddington Warwickshire (misspelled on the plate with only one D), now part of Stratford on Avon, is featured in the 1906 antique book entitled "Old English Country Cottages" on page 131 in the section which features the gardens, style and craftsmanship of cottages in that area.
This picturesque dark brown / black transfer ware plate / platter / charger depicts a real quintessential, thatched English cottage farmhouse surrounded by a plethora of country flowers and a keepers bee skeps. It has a nice embossed border of scrolls and plumes with a painted mustard green outline. The scene has some hand painted highlights of brown, taupe, gold, green, red, yellow and blue.
