PASTORAL TRANSFERWARE CAKE PLATE / PLATTER
~ABSOLUTELY STUNNING ~
From one of my all time favorite transferware patterns, I am offering this wonderful quartered/sectioned plate from one of Englands finest potters...Spode. The pattern is called Byron. Each piece in this series features a different pastoral scene...based loosely on the poetry of Byron himself according to Robert Copeland. Equally interesting, is that this pattern was never (to my knowledge) introduced into the United States...so even if you do come across it, most likely pieces are located in England or Australia.
This particular plate was offered by the firm of Angus Watson, proprietors of Skipper Sardines and used in conjunction with a sales promotion based on the purchase of a premium gift. The pattern was registered first in 1851. This is one of two plates in the special promotional series.
The border is a brown transfer intertwined with bundles of grapes amongst lush ivy. The scene depicts two women visiting, one has a her arms filled with baskets of live chickens.
The detail in this piece is exquisite and had been painstakingly hand painted in large part with hues of gold, brown, green, blue and red.
Condition is great. There is only some very minor browning around the back edges of the plate.
