Here is a refined and evocative set of six antique Copeland Spode game bird plates, beautifully illustrating classic English and European game birds in countryside scenes. Each plate features a distinct hand-colored bird study—pheasant, grouse, partridge, woodcock, geese, and blackcock—set within softly painted landscapes that capture the romance of traditional sporting art.

What makes this set especially desirable is the uncommon pale blue Gadroon rim.  This softer blue palette is far less frequently encountered than the typical brown or deep cobalt borders, giving the set a lighter, more decorative feel that blends effortlessly into English cottage, traditional, or garden-inspired interiors.

The plates are displayed here as a cohesive grouping, but each stands beautifully on its own as well—perfect for wall arrangements, bookcases, or tabletop vignettes.

🐦 The Birds


Left column (top → bottom)

  1. Flying Pheasant (likely cock pheasant)
    – Long tail, warm chestnut body, classic upland game subject.
  2. Woodcock or Snipe
    – Slender body, long bill, marsh setting → very typical of woodcock plates.
  3. Partridge / possibly Red Grouse in flight
    – Smaller, rounded bird, often shown flushing upward.

Right column (top → bottom)

  1. Blackcock (Black Grouse)
    – Dark body, upright stance, often shown on moorland. (This plate was broken and glued back together, however there is what makes it look like a hairline ..see close up pic)
  2. Partridge with chicks
    – A very popular Spode subject—adds charm and narrative.
  3. Canada Geese (or domestic geese in landscape)
    – Larger waterfowl, often included to round out the “game” theme
