Black Advertising Grocers Display English BUTTER Dairy Slab Tray
BUTTER Dairy Slab
Made from the original English moulds, these English ironstone stands were first used in markets and grocery stores as counter top displays for margarine, butter, lard, meats and cheese. Most were in use between the late 1800's and early 1900's. Today, what remains of these pieces are highly sought and collected and even reproductions like this are hard to come by, but of course at a fraction of the cost of the originals.
What a great piece to use for serving cheeses or display. I have several slabs in my collection (some antique and some reproduction shown in photo 2) and use one to hold vintage pitchers full of kitchen utensils, oil, salt pepper, etc (photo 4). I also use them with a glass cloche / cake dome over them for cookies, etc.
