Painshill

This deeply intense blue platter comes from Ralph Hall, an earthenware and Stone China manufacturer at Swan Bank pottery works, Tunstall, Stoke On Trent.  This piece is from one of his most notable and major blue series called Select Views.  It was made for the export market and is highly sought amongst collectors.  It depicts Painshill near Surrey

Created in the 18th century by Charles Hamilton as a living painting, Painshill invites you to walk around a work of art and discover dramatic follies, calming waters and stunning views.

Painshill is regarded as one of the foremost and finest examples of the English Landscape Movement. A style of landscape design that has been described, by architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner, as “Britain’s’ greatest contribution to the visual arts”.

Measures: 10”

Condition: No cracks or chips. There is a little rim wear and some typical glaze flakes or stilt makes, surface scratches and / or clay clumps so commonly found on pieces 200 years old!  I have around 30 at the time of listing.  A handful have a chip to either the back rim or foot rim, none of which detract from the top/front or can be seen without turning the plate over.

Marked on back: It has an impressed number and a printed mark reading R HALL’s SELECT VIEWS Pains Hill Surrey Stone China
