BROWN TRANSFER WARE PLATE

Gathering Hay at Harvest

In 1849, W T Copeland commissioned artist Edward Duncan to paint a series of sepia water colors to inspire a selection of tableware. In the following year Copeland Spode registered the new Rural Scenes pattern. It was produced subsequently without a border design and was called Duncan Scenes. Around 1878 the production was limited and printed in brown on cream bodied eartherware in Amien embossed shape with Gadroon rims. The Copleand family retained a dinner set in this pattern. This plate is a wonderful example of the series...for collectors or for a lover of farm scenes, such is this with men gathering hay, and rural scenery.

Measures: 8 7/8" just under 9" x a bit under 1.5" deep

Condition: Excellent for age, no chips or cracks. I found minimal or no crazing. There are faint surface scratches which can be seen when turned in light at an angle, a bit of rim wear, as well as one or two of the plates having some grittiness or small clay clumps which is typical with this pattern and pieces of this age.

Marked: I have a few of these plates which are impressed with the word Copeland and a B below. Some have an additional number or letter combination of 7 &/0r M 80
