This truly stunning example dating to the 1830's in the pattern named simply Cornelian, short for the type of Cornelian Cherry Dogwood branches the birds are perched in. This is one of the first trees to bloom in Spring and is native to Europe and Asia.
After 1828, technology allowed potters to produce two and three color transfer wares. Yellow is the very rarest color of transferware, and the intricacy in transfer placement on this piece is unsurpassed.
The focus of the pattern is a pair of lovebirds perched on a flowering branches of Cornelian Cherry Dogwood in the center of the plate. A printed yellow border frames the arrangement around the edge of the plate. The border is enhanced with a central braided looking decoration which is edged in a tatting-like design in contrasting brown. A series of brown transfer floral sprigs appear to have been carefully placed around the border.
