Rare Crescent Shape Antique Game Bird Staffordshire Quail Salad Plate Blue Transferware
Brand Powell & Bishop
Here is a very hard to find Crescent Shaped Wild Game Bird plate featuring a pair of Quail, possibly Grouse, in woodland grasses. It is a Salad or Dessert Plate in a Blue transfer. I've never seen these larger crescent plates with pheasants or other game birds (I have a turkey one listed separately).
This lovely blue transferware plate was manufactured in Staffordshire England featuring a pair of woodland pheasants with a classic border of scrolls with dotted cartouches. It has a pie crust rim.
Marked Athena Bisto England on back. This same pattern was also produced by Powell & Bishop.
The mark (Caduceus) was registered as a trade mark by Powell & Bishop in 1876, subsequently used by Bishop & Stonier. The "Bisto" trade name was only used by Bishop and Stonier.
Plate measures appx. 9" x 5 1/2"
Condition shallow rim flake on lower right corner (this has been discounted by $22 due to the minor flaw)
