Antique Black Advertising Grocers Scale English Dairy Birmingham Avery Scales
Brand Carnegie & Layton
EDWARDIAN CAST-IRON WEIGHING SCALES
by the British firm of W T Avery of BIRMINGHAM. W & T Avery was a British manufacturer of weighing machines and scales. The company was founded in 1738 and took the name W & T Avery in 1818 after two of the original owners sons. These are hard to find, especially intact. A very similar scale is in the collection of Britains National Trust http://www.nationaltrustcollections.org.uk/object/883916.1
Originally these English ironstone stands were used in markets and grocery stores as counter top displays for margarine, butter, lard, meats and cheese. Most were in use between the late 1800's and early 1900's. Today, what remains of these pieces are highly sought and collected. This one is very hard to find in this shape and size. Features an Ironstone Slab / Plate depicting Scales with the A logo for Averies overlay. It is in excellent condition, just needs some cleaning up.
What a great piece to use for serving cheeses or simply for display.
12 1/4" x 6" x 6 1/2" Dairy Slab is about 7.5" wide
Condition: Better than the majority I have seen, especially considering that this still has its original plate. The base is cast iron. The base was finished in a brass overlay or paint which has worn and come off in some spots.
