Very RARE Two Color Red & Black Transferware 8” Square Plate Spode Copeland Continental Views Hand Painted

Brand Spode Copeland

This product is unavailable

The pattern is called Continental Views and was first produced in 1844-45. After 1828, technology allowed potters to produce two and three color transfer wares. This lovely example dates to about the 1930's and has a Gadroon edge. It is done with a red border and black face.  Both border and face, in addition to being a two color transferred piece, featured stunning hand painted colorations of  blue, yellow, green and red which really set these apart and make them pop.  These are also referred to as polychrome, meaning they have hand painted touches of color over the transfer, but under the glaze so it is permanent.
