A timeless English beauty, this Spode Copeland plate produced in the Chelsea Wicker shape features a richly colored bouquet of classic roses in a soft blue transfer with hand painted deep crimson and green delicately arranged at the center. The vibrant green basketweave border adds a fresh, lively contrast against the warm cream ground, while the softly scalloped edge gives it that unmistakable antique charm.
According to Pam Woolliscroft, former Spode Museum curator and author of the Spode History blog, Spode registered the Chelsea Wicker shape on 29 October 1890 as design no. 159997. The name refers to a revival style: the fluted rim was said to derive from the old Chelsea factory tradition, while the wicker embossing echoed basket-weave decoration Spode had used earlier in the 1800s. Early pattern-book references describe it as “Basket Work Chelsea Shape.”
Elegant yet cheerful, this piece feels equally at home in a layered table setting or displayed as part of a collected wall. The rose motif is enduring and romantic—perfect for those who love traditional English transferware with a bit of personality and color.
A lovely addition to any collection or a standout piece to mix into your everyday table for a touch of history and charm.
