Antique BWM 19C Aesthetic Movement Purple Burgundy Wild Roses Transferware Plate

$99.99

Brand Westhead & Moore

For consideration is this stunning antique Aesthetic Movement Staffordshire plates by Brown Westhead and Moore with a Cauldon mark dating it to the 1880’s

This striking antique plate features a lush arrangement of wild roses rendered in rich purple-burgundy tones, softly blending into blush and creamy highlights. The open blooms reveal delicate golden stamens, while thorned stems and serrated leaves sweep gracefully across the surface in warm greens and muted ochres. The depth of color and painterly shading give the piece a romantic, almost botanical-study quality so beloved during the Aesthetic Movement of the late 19th century.

The design is brown transferware with hand colored enamel, a technique that combines transfer printed detail with individually applied enamel decoration. This method allowed for both precision and artistry, giving each plate subtle variation and character.

Cauldon was part of the distinguished Brown Wedthead Moore (BWM) pottery of Staffordshire, England. BWM operated in the mid-to-late 19th century and became known for producing high-quality earthenware and porcelain for both the English and export markets. The Cauldon name later became synonymous with refined tablewares and artistic designs that reflected the changing tastes of the Victorian era, including the naturalistic and richly colored motifs of the Aesthetic Movement.

A beautiful display piece for a stand, cabinet, or layered wall arrangement, this plate embodies the period’s love of “art for art’s sake” — where even everyday objects were elevated into works of beauty.
