Brand Copeland Spode

HUGE 15” EARLY SPODE COPELAND PASTORAL SCENE  CHOP PLATE / PLATTER

From my personal collection, here is one of my favorite transferware designs ever produced on Staffordshire pottery. This is an early platter or chop plate by Spode / Copeland in the Byron pattern.  The well depicts the engraved artwork of the 1880 painting by J C Horsley entitled The Pet of the Common.  It depicts children with a baby donkey.  It is bordered with a trellis of grape leaves and berry bundles.  The scene is painted by hand with shades of pink, brown, blue, green and gold.

Several scenes on the Byron series were artwork by J.C. Horsley. John Calcott Horsley designed in 1840 the first ever commercialy produced Christmas card, commissioned by Henry Cole.

Absolutely one of the most beautiful pastoral scenes ever applied to transfer ware.
