Vintage Hand Carved Wood Box w/ Inset English Woven Silk of Pheasants / Game Birds
The beautiful woven picture inset in this box is made by artists at Cash’s of Coventry, an English ribbon weaving firm since 1846. Over 100 years ago the Free Trade Bill was passed which put thousands of ribbon weavers out of work and forced them into poverty. One mill owner began making silk bookmarks and pictures using the same looms and skills needed for ribbon making. They became popular and collectible are today still sought out for their unique beauty.
This silk details a pair of pheasants on a branch amongst woodland grasses and flowers. The detail is remarkable! It is inset into a hand made / carved wood box specially made by craftsmen in Poland. The box is hinged and has a divider inside so there are two sections.
