No. 38 — Grace Takes Flight

This unusual antique-style triangular bowl by Mason's features the romantic Watteau pattern, with a beautifully detailed garden scene depicting elegantly dressed figures gathered among trees, flowering vines, and classical architectural elements. Delicate purple transferware florals frame the scene, while its distinctive triangular shape and decorative handles lend it an especially charming and unexpected silhouette.

One of the original handles had been broken, but rather than attempting to disguise what was missing, I chose to give the piece an entirely new detail. A magnificent jeweled dragonfly, with shimmering amethyst and violet wings, a dark faceted body, and delicate sparkling accents, now rests where the handle once belonged. It looks as though it has just landed in the garden, becoming part of the romantic scene and transforming an imperfection into something wonderfully unexpected.

Part of Fragments of Grace: The Beautifully Broken Collection, this one-of-a-kind piece beautifully expresses the heart of the collection. Sometimes restoration doesn't mean putting everything back exactly as it was. Sometimes God takes what has been broken or lost and creates something entirely different — something we never could have imagined, yet beautiful in its own right.
