This Spode barbecue plate has a whimsical, storybook-style illustration set in the center of a softly triangular white plate with rounded edges. The scene depicts a playfully comedic countryside race or chase: several riders in colorful attire—reds, yellows, and greens—are mounted on a mix of animals, including traditional horses and  a monkey riding a kangaroo, all leaping over a narrow stream.

The animals are mid-motion, giving the scene a lively, humorous energy. Beneath them, small yellow ducklings scatter along the water’s edge, adding charm and a sense of rural life. The grass is rendered in soft greens with simple, painterly strokes, keeping the focus on the animated figures.

The overall aesthetic feels distinctly British and nostalgic—lighthearted, slightly eccentric, and reminiscent of vintage children’s book illustrations or countryside sporting scenes. The clean white border frames the action nicely, making it ideal as both a functional plate and a decorative piece.
