C. 1828-46 RARE Green Transferware Staffordshire Plate Celtic Venetian Scenery Enoch Woods

$79.99

Brand Enoch Wood

E W & S (Enoch Wood and Sons),

Green and white transfer print plate in the "Venetian Scenery" pattern. The plate is scalloped  on the outer rim which has a daisy design. 8 floral reserves are spaced about the rim with an over-lay column pattern which descends into the well. Leafy sprays connect the column bases. Central scene has over-sized flowers in the foreground, tall tree appears  with church-like buildings, and a river divides the scene with an ornate sailboat. Two figures appears in the foreground, buildings and mountains in background. Bottom is stamped  "Venetian Scenery" outlined with scrolls. "Celtic" appears above the scroll, "China" appears below with "EW & S" to the left.

A series of alternating floral clusters seem to have alighted on a frame of fine grillwork around the border of Wood's exotic "Venetian Scenery" pattern.  Wood creates a sense of delicacy and opulence in this green transfer pattern by extending the filigree grillwork from the edge, across the flange, and down into the well of the plate.

"Celtic China" was a tradename used by Wood and a few other potters indicating that some elements of the clay formula came from Wales (as opposed to the Staffordshire region of England where most materials came from).
