Early Staffordshire
BI COLOR YELLOW & BROWN TRANSFERWARE TEA CUP & SAUCER

Cornelian

Circa 1830-35

For consideration I am offering this stunning, early Staffordshire teacup and saucer in a pattern seldom found called Cornelian.  Cornelian, short for the type of Cornelian Cherry Dogwood branches the birds are perched in.  This is one of the first trees to bloom in Spring and is native to Europe and Asia  It is done in a rare two color transfer, yellow (the rarest and most difficult to find color of transferware) and brown.   After 1828, newly developed technology allowed potters to produce two and three color transfer wares.  The pattern on this set is so delicate.  It depicts a pair of lovebirds perched on flowering branches of Cornelian Cherry Dogwood.  A printed yellow border frames the arrangement.   The border is enhanced with a central braided looking decoration which is edged in a tatting-like design in contrasting brown.  A series of brown transfer floral sprigs appear to have been carefully placed around the border.

Measures:  Appx:  Saucer: 5.75" Cup: 4.75" handle to opposite rim

Condition:  No chips or cracks, mild crazing, stilt marks (as shown) on bottom of saucer
