Antique Minton China Works Art Nouveau Tile, c. 1905–1915
A beautiful antique English tile by Minton China Works of Stoke-on-Trent, featuring an elegant Art Nouveau floral design in warm brown transferware tones. The stylized botanical motif, with its sinuous stems and scrolling background, is characteristic of the Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau influence that shaped English decorative design in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The reverse is impressed “MINTONS / CHINA WORKS / STOKE-ON-TRENT / MADE IN ENGLAND,” helping date the tile to the early 20th century, most likely circa 1905–1915.
Minton is one of the most celebrated names in English ceramics. Founded in Stoke-on-Trent in 1793, the firm became a leading force in British pottery, known for fine china, majolica, encaustic tiles, and architectural ceramics. Under Herbert Minton’s leadership in the 19th century, the company became especially important in tile production, supplying decorative tiles for churches, public buildings, and prestigious interiors throughout Britain and abroad. The British Museum notes that Minton’s tile business developed into separate branches in the 1840s, including Minton & Co. for encaustic tiles and Minton, Hollins & Co. for printed, painted, and majolica wall tiles.
