BLUE TRANSFER WARE PLATE
Landing of the Pilgrims
For consideration is this highly collectible, historical Staffordshire octagon shaped plate depicting one of the great American history paintings of the 19th century, The Landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock, 1620. This dynamic, Grand Manner composition from 1854 is a masterwork by renowned Philadelphia artist Peter F. Rothermel (1812–95). It was engraved in copper and produced on transferware.
The border is surrounded with several cartouches pertaining to significant times and/or peoples of the U.S. history....The Mayflower in Plymouth Harbour, an American Indian on horseback with bow and arrow, a Pilgrim couple watching the Mayflower return, and Pocohontas saving the life of John Smith.
Rothermel’s sensational interpretation was less concerned with portraying the facts of history than in perpetuating its mythic dimensions. The histrionics of this romantic rendering proclaim the inspiration of British poet Felicia Hemans’ popular poem, “The Landing of the Pilgrims in New England,” 182. The heroic determinism celebrated in The Landing of the Pilgrims takes its place among the many contemporary images affirming America’s Manifest Destiny.
