Spode Copeland Duncan Rural Scenes

BLUE TRANSFER WARE  PLATTER


In 1849, W T Copeland commissioned artist Edward Duncan to paint a series of sepia water colors to inspire a selection of tableware. In the following year Copeland Spode registered the new Rural Scenes pattern. It was produced subsequently without a border design and was called Duncan Scenes. Around 1878 the production was limited and printed in brown on cream bodied earthenware in Amien embossed shape with Gadroon rims. The Copeland family retained a dinner set in this pattern. 

This platter is done in a deep teal/steel  blue with a heavy scalloped, gilded edge.  I bought several pieces of this particular set and I believe it was a custom set for a retailer Oxford Street in London
as some pieces have an additional retailer mark on the back, which was  what high end department and specialty stores often did when purchasing for their own stores/brand.  Additionally, I have never come across this particular color in this pattern.

Measures: appx 13” x 10”

Condition: Good with one exception to a flak / chip along the outer rim.  You can see this if you look closely at the area located between 7:00  and 8:00.  Other than just a little wear to the gilded rIm around the edges. 
Price has been discounted due to the chip.

Marked: I have a few of these plates which are impressed with the word Copeland and a B below. Some have an additional number or letter combination of 5 &/0r Y 80
