1902 Royal Doulton Antique Resting Cattle Cows Matsumai Flow Blue Transferware Plate Chinoiserie Border

Brand Royal Doulton

English Staffordshire
Doulton Burslem Grazing Cattle / Cows

Circa 1902

For consideration is this very rare, Chinoiserie bordered transfer ware plate by (Royal) Doulton of Burslem, England.  The plate reveals a stunning depiction of three resting and grazing cows transfer printed in blue surrounded by an elaborate Matsumai border in deep cobalt, rust, gold and green.  It has gilt highlights as well. Very unusual to find this plate, particularly in this colorway.

This plate dates shortly after "Royal" was added to the Doulton name. The Royal warrant  was given just a year before in 1901 when the factory was honoured by the presentation of the Royal Warrant to its Chairman, and the Doulton Potteries received the right to use the word " Royal " in the description of their manufactures. The Burslem factory has been favoured by many Royal visits, the most recent being when Princess Elizabeth (H.M. Queen Elizabeth II) spent an hour and a half in the plant on November 2nd, 1949.

* The matching plate featuring a different scene with Highland cattle (shown in last photo) is listed separately
