Here is a wonderful platter by Gien of France depicting a fish with wonderful lettering in black, reading:

The platter has some minor touches of color in a brick red, taupe and green.
Gien was founded in 1821 by Thomas Hall, and Englishman who wanted to introduce fine English earthenware manufacturing techniques in France.
Production first began with functional tableware, then went on to make more formal dinnerware, decorative pieces and tableware emblazoned with notable families' coats of arms.
