Antique, dark blue Staffordshire pearlware plate depicting Joseph, Mary and baby Jesus.

This plate was produced in England by Enoch Wood & Sons, a large pottery operation located in Burslem, a town in the Staffordshire pottery district. The Wood firm exported a vast quantity of pottery to American in the 1820s and 1830s and a single shipment sent to a Philadelphia China broker contained some 262,000 pieces of pottery (see Geoffrey A Godden's `Encyclopedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks' published in 1964 by Bonanza Books, New York 1964 pg 686). The impressed mark on the back of the plate listed here was used by Wood & Sons from July, 1818 up through the 1820s and into the 1830s (ibid. 686, variant of marks #4257 & 4258). There is also a small asterisk impressed into the back

SIZE: This plate measures appx. 10” inches across (diameter) and stands about 1 to 1/8 inches tall along its rim. 

CONDITION: Excellent condition for age, no chips or cracks
