The Homer Laughlin China Company was born first as The Laughlin Brothers in 1871 along the banks of the Ohio River, in the small town of East Liverpool. Founded by Scotch-Irish brothers Homer, and Shakespeare, who first were importers of English ironstone.  The company fast became successful... so popular, in fact, that the company was accused of counterfeiting English trademarks by British manufacturers. In response to this accusation, Laughlin devised an anti-English trademark of a lion supine mounted by a rampant eagle standing on the lion's belly. By 1879 Homer had bought his brother out and changed the name of the company to Homer Laughlin having taking on a new partner.   Homer Laughlin would quickly become the largest manufacturer of pottery in America and is now the last standing, still in operation today.
