Set of 2 VINTAGE PORTIEUX VALLERYSTHAL FRANCE WHITE MILK GLASS SCROLLED SQUARE COMPOTE & FOOTED BOWL

Brand Nancy's Daily Dish
Here is a beautiful set of 1930’s vintage French Portieux Vallerysthal white opaline milk glass dishes. This specific pattern features highly detailed, Baroque-inspired ornate scrolled reliefs and feathers. There is a compote dish and a footed trinket dish or candy bowl. I found these with the bowl placed on top like a lid, and though I think it’s pretty I do not believe that’s the proper function. I do show it that way in one photo. The slighter smaller dish is able to stack inside the taller compote.
Portieux Vallerysthal is a merger of two famous glass makers.
Vallerysthal Glassworks (Founded 1836): Located in the Lorraine region. Following the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, this region became part of Germany, creating massive export tariffs for their primarily French customer base.
Portieux Glassworks (Founded 1705): Established by Francois Magnien in the Vosges region of northeastern France under the patronage of Duke Leopold of Lorraine. It focused heavily on French markets
To bypass German trade barriers, Vallerysthal purchased Portieux in the late 19th century. This gave them operations on both sides of the border. Pieces could be manufactured and freely stamped or distributed for both German and French markets without border friction. Rarely were pieces marked as they shipped with foil stickers which were removed or washed away over time
