Spode Copeland Blue & Green Transferware Plate w/ Butterfly & Basket Weave Border

$24.99

Brand Nancy's Daily Dish

A charming antique Spode earthenware plate featuring a scalloped rim and an elegant embossed basketweave border. The plate is decorated with a delicate wreath of blue grapevine leaves and clusters of pale green grapes encircling the center. At the heart of the design, enhancing the original design is a beautifully executed overglaze butterfly at the center, rendered in soft shades of blue with delicate black veining, elongated swallowtail tails, and subtle crimson accents. The butterfly appears to float within the grapevine wreath, creating a naturalistic focal point that complements the botanical decoration.

The combination of embossed white ware, botanical transfer decoration, and the graceful butterfly creates a refined Victorian aesthetic. The crisp blue and green palette contrasts beautifully against the creamy white ground, highlighting the craftsmanship associated with Spode's decorative tablewares. Both decorative and collectible, this piece exemplifies the enduring appeal of antique English transferware and nature-inspired ceramics.

According to Pam Woolliscroft, former Spode Museum curator and author of the Spode History blog, Spode registered the Chelsea Wicker shape on 29 October 1890 as design no. 159997. The name refers to a revival style: the fluted rim was said to derive from the old Chelsea factory tradition, while the wicker embossing echoed basket-weave decoration Spode had used earlier in the 1800s. Early pattern-book references describe it as “Basket Work Chelsea Shape”.

A lovely addition to any collection or a standout piece to mix into your everyday decor.
