PASTORAL TRANSFERWARE SQUARE PLATE / PLATTER

~ABSOLUTELY STUNNING ~

From one of my all time favorite transferware patterns, I am offering this wonderful square shaped tray or plate from one of Englands finest potters...Spode. The pattern is called Byron. Each piece in this series features a different pastoral scene. Commissioned by Copeland, much of the artwork on Spode Byron is by J C Horsley...Mr. Horsley also is credited with the design of the first ever commercially produced Christmas card!

The pattern was registered first in 1851.

The border is a brown transfer intertwined with bundles of grapes amongst lush ivy. The scene depicts two women visiting, one has a her arms filled with baskets of live chickens.

The detail in this piece is exquisite and had been painstakingly hand painted in large part with hues of gold, brown, green, blue and red. This is the first time I've come across square plates in this colorway...they are very hard to find as all Spode Byron pieces are in these colors.

Condition is great. There is some wear to the green paint around the border.

Measures: approximately: . 8.25" x 8.25"
