Staffordshire China Huge Thanksgiving Platter Tom Turkey Ridgway Staffordshire Beehive Stamp

Brand Ridgway

Victorian Staffordshire
Circa 1891-1920

For consideration is this very rare, brown serving tray by William Ridgway depicting a stunning Tom Turkey at center stage. It is bordered with varied botanicals in lacey detail. It is absolutely stunning and a great opportunity to add an exquisite piece to your collection, one that is sure to be a family heirloom and can be handed down. It is stamped as shown below with a beehive mark and the inclusion of the country of origin dating this between 1891-1920. This fabulous platter often commands prices near $1000 and sometimes even more. The Flo Blue version seems to bring more, but the brown is more difficult to find. In fact, this is the first time I have had one of these for sale.

Ridgway Potteries Ltd, was founded sometime around 1744. Sometimes called the Grandfather of the Potteries, the Ridgway family can be traced to the earliest days of the Staffordshire potteries, along with such famous names as Wedgwood, Spode and Adams.

Under the managment of one family member, John Ridgway, the Ridgway potters were appointed as Potter to Her Majesty Queen Victoria. This was the highest acclaim for any English pottery firm.

One of the family members, William Ridgway, operated the Bell Works in Shelton and the Church Works in nearby Hanley from 1830-54. The Bell Works Pottery at Bethesda Street has been The Potteries Musuem since 1956 and houses the largest and most important collection of North Staffordshire pottery in the world.

Measures: 19 3/4" x 15 3/4"

Condition: As pristine as you could find. No chips or cracks, only a small amount of crazing is present. The color is vibrant, the style is elegant and classic, the glaze still bright and shiny.
