EARLY SPODE COPELAND

PASTORAL TRANSFERWARE PLATTER

~ABSOLUTELY STUNNING ~

Here is one of my favorite transferware designs ever produced on Staffordshire pottery. This is an early platter by famed English potter Spode.

Here is one of my favorite transferware designs ever produced on Staffordshire pottery. This is an early platter by famed English potter Spode in the difficult to find pattern entitled Byron, which was first registered in the British Patent office in 1851. Each piece in this series depicts a different scene of rural English life.

The Byron pattern is getting harder and harder to find, particularly in this colorway. The scenes are said to be loosely based on Byron’s poetry. This particular platter has a brown transferware border of lattice intertwined with lush ivy and bundles of grapes. The plate depicts a rural stone farmhouse with a thatched roof and ivy growing overhead. There are two women at the door, overlooking and appearing to be listening to the conversation taking place outside between an elderly couple and the Cow Dr. who has come to tend to their sick cow. There is a young girl kneeling on the ground and either placing something in or taking something out of the open box in front of her.

The detail in this piece is exquisite and has been painstakingly hand painted in large part with hues of gold, Robin's egg blue and rust. It has a painted burgundy trim. I very, very rarely come across Byron pieces in this color way. It is stunning!

Condition is near mint for its age, no chips, cracks or repairs. Only some minor paint loss to the paints green edge and some typical crazing attesting to its age.

Measures: appox. 15.25" x 13.75"
