Meakin Romantic England Scenic Romantic England Side Plate
This plate is hard to find in this pattern.  It features a stunning view of John Miltons Cottage. In 1665, Milton and his wife retreated here to escape the Great Plague in London. Though he lived in the cottage for less than a year, it remains significant as his only surviving residence. It was within these walls that Milton completed Paradise Lost, with the early ideas for Paradise Regained also taking shape during his time here.

The scene beautifully captures the quiet rural setting that inspired one of literature’s most enduring works, making this piece especially appealing to collectors of transferware and literary history alike.

The border features a richly detailed Victorian-style floral and fruit motif, with clusters of berries, blossoms, and layered foliage woven together in a dense, scrolling design. The pattern has a softly romantic, almost garden-like feel, with fine stippling and shading that adds depth and texture. The gently scalloped edge enhances the movement of the design, giving the plate an elegant, softly ruffled silhouette.

The plate is marked as follows: Romantic England Penshurst Place Kent C. 1341 Historic ancestral home of the sidneys Sir Philip Sidney. Poet and soldier was born here. J & G Meakin Permanent Decoration A genuine hand engraving
