Brand Nancy's Daily Dish
Up for sale is a beautifully preserved, rare 19th-century British transferware plate in the scarce "Mexican" pattern, manufactured by Staffordshire potter Joseph Lakin (operating as J. Lakin / J.L.) in Longton, England.
The central medallion features a remarkably crisp, romanticized early-Victorian vignette of Mexican figures in traditional costume, laborers with a laden donkey, lush tropical foliage, and a smoking volcano in the background. The rim is framed by a rich, continuous border of oversized florals, roses, and delicate ferns.
The reverse side bears a clean, clear printed underglaze cartouche featuring a leafy scroll frame with the pattern name "MEXICAN" and the manufacturer's initials "J.L."
