Antique Wedgwood Dark Flow Blue Transferware Plate California
$47.99
Brand Wedgwood
Beautiful, antique dark flow blue transferware plate by Wedgwood, circa 1849. Although titled California, this is not what is depicted. Like many transferware patterns of the 1840s–1850s, it depicts an idealized romantic landscape inspired by Italian and classical scenery:
- A grand villa or palace set beside a lake.
- Mountains rising dramatically in the background.
- Classical terraces and balustrades.
- A garden statue overlooking the water.
- Small boats on a tranquil lake.
These scenes were meant to evoke the fashionable "Grand Tour" landscapes that were popular in Victorian decorative arts. The pattern name "California" likely capitalized on excitement surrounding the California Gold Rush era, rather than depicting an actual California location.
Encircling the central landscape is an elaborate border of floral cartouches and tiny architectural scenes, each one like a miniature framed engraving. Delicate bouquets bloom within rounded reserves, while stately villas and country houses peek through groves of trees in the surrounding panels. The intricate geometric tracery that links these elements together creates a sense of movement around the plate, inviting the eye to wander from flower garden to country estate before returning to the serene lakeside vista at the center. Richly detailed and beautifully balanced, the border exemplifies the romantic charm that makes mid-19th century transferware so enduringly appealing.
The registration diamond on the mark indicates the pattern was registered on April 2, 1849, and the California pattern was produced in the mid-19th century.
