Vintage 1980's / early 90's Hand Painted Wooden Pair of Candlesticks
A wonderfully whimsical pair of vintage hand-painted candlesticks by Jane Keltner. They appear hand turned and are finished in a soft sage apple green with warm ochre, cream and gilded accents, each is decorated by hand with charming little still lifes of pears, berries and fruit surrounded by loose scrolling foliage.
The beautifully shaped stems rise from broad painted bases featuring a wonderfully imperfect checked and vine motif, giving them the unmistakable character of English country and European folk art. Gold-tone candle cups add just the right touch of polish.
I especially love the slightly naïve quality of the hand painting—no two details are exactly alike, and the visible brushwork is part of their charm. Display them on a mantel, dining table or sideboard, or tuck them among transferware and other collected pieces for an instantly layered country-house look.
