VINTAGE Spode Copeland Tower  Game Bird Series Woodcock Plate

Woodcock No. 9

BLUE TRANSFERWARE

Absolutely stunning example of the Game Bird Series by Spode / Copeland depicting Woodcock with the classic Tower border.  The birds are framed in a border of various woodland botanicals.    Stunning!

 Hard to find!

The Tower pattern was first introduced in 1814 and was derived from a printed illustration titled 'Views of Rome and its Vicinity' published sometime around 1798. The traditional pattern depicts The Bridge at Salero in Rome. The border was adapted to various themes over 200 years it was in production, from Fish, to Game Birds, Rabbits to Nursery scenes.   It was produced mostly in blue and pink.  The Tower pattern ceased production in 2009 when the Spode factory closed.
