EARLY SPODE COPELAND BYRON
PASTORAL TRANSFERWARE SALAD / DESSERT PLATE
The scene on this plate depicts a young Mother holding an infant with the family dog at her feet. She stands in front a modest cottage. The border is a flowing blend of ivy growing on lattice. A beautiful color combination of gold, blue, brown, taupe and green which are hand painted within the confines of the brown transfer. The plate rim is trimmed with a hand painted green enamel.
Some scenes on the Byron series (most pieces have a unique depiction of rural English country life) were artwork by J.C. Horsley. John Calcott Horsley designed in 1840 the first ever commercially produced Christmas card, commissioned by Henry Cole. He was also the rector of the Royal Academy where he campaigned against the use of nude models.
Absolutely one of the most beautiful pastoral scenes ever applied to transfer ware.
Measures appx 7 7/8"
Condition is very good having no chips, cracks, or repairs. There is some typical age related crazing and minor scuffs around the painted outside edge.
