Spode Byron COPELAND PASTORAL SCENE PLATE

Here is one of my favorite transferware designs ever produced on Staffordshire pottery. This is an early plate by  Spode in the difficult to find pattern entitled Byron. It depicts two young girls and their Mother gathering wheat. One of the girls sits atop a fence as her dog looks on curiously. There are many difference scenes in this series, each depicting rural English life. The detail in the transfer is exquisite and has been lovingly hand painted in places with hues of brown/gold, green, blue, taupe, pink and yellows.

Some of  the Byron series were artwork by J.C. Horsley. John Calcott Horsley designed in 1840 the first ever commercially produced Christmas card, commissioned by Henry Cole. He was also the rector of the Royal Academy where he campaigned against the use of nude models.

Absolutely one of the most beautiful pastoral scenes ever applied to transfer ware.
