This highly collectible, historical Staffordshire transferware plate depicts British General Charles Cornwallis as he formally surrenders 8,000 British soldiers and seamen to a French and American force at Yorktown, Virginia on October 19, 1781, bringing the American Revolution to a close.
The Surrender of Lord Cornwallis is an oil painting by John Trumbull. The painting was completed in 1820, and hangs in the rotunda of the United States Capitol in Washington, D. C.
This series of plates was produced in 1932 by Crown Ducal to commemorate the bicentenary of Washington! English potters were keen to supply the American markets with historical images of our victories, even when against the English themselves! The border is surrounded by lush roses and cartouches filled with the same.
