A charming set of four antique C. H. Field Haviland Limoges porcelain plates, each beautifully hand-decorated with a different country sporting scene. The vignettes feature game birds in flight, wildfowl, deer, hares and birds set against softly painted marshes, meadows and winter landscapes, with delicate flowering and botanical branches winding through each composition. Finished with softly scalloped corners and fine gilt edging, these are wonderfully decorative examples of the romantic European sporting aesthetic. Each plate tells its own little story, making the set especially lovely displayed together as a collection or incorporated into an English country-style plate wall.

What I particularly love is that they're not simply "bird plates." Each is almost a little painted vignette or sporting narrative, combining wildlife, landscape, seasonal vegetation and architectural details. The square, softly scalloped form with the fine gilt edge makes them feel very decorative as well.

The have that lovely French interpretation of English country sporting life—game birds, deer, hares, marshes, hunting landscapes and country cottages—rather than the more formal floral decoration usually associated with Limoges.

C. H. Field Haviland was a Limoges maker/decorator associated with Charles Field Haviland, and examples with the C.H. Field Haviland/GDA marks are documented from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

They are gently scalloped and painted gold around the outer rims.

These would be stunning hanging in a French or Old World styled kitchen or along the back of an antique hutch or cupboard to display them.  They’d be lovely in any cabin or hunt themed decor, flanking a painting or mirror hanging on the wall.
